Silence of The Labs

I have a like/don’t like relationship with science. I guess it is not really the science, rather the people behind the science. Ones that can be manipulated, swayed or pushed into saying things are safe when they are not.

The Fifth Estate aired a program called Silence of the Labs. I had heard about Canadian scientists being muzzled by the government using various techniques. Someone said it was all to do with keeping things in line with what our government wants to portray.

I don’t claim that I have any special knowledge about the dangers of things like fracking, mining, toxins from industry, the storing of depleted uranium, carbon, nuclear waste. The list is long. I don’t think you have to be a scientist to notice the environment and people close to these places are sick. They call them clusters.

That is what gets on my nerves. That they take the average Canadian for a fool. That we don’t know anything. For the people who do know, they are dealt with, called names like school grade children would do. Make them feel or look like idiots. Scare tactics, make sure people will be too afraid to speak out. Once again, the list of techniques is long.

The fact that this has happened tells a different story to the one that is given. This is the list of Federal programs and research facilities that have been closed or had their funding reduced from the CBC web site featuring the Fifth Estate program:

    • Environmental Emergency Response Program
    • Urban Wastewater Program

In May 2013, the federal government announced the facility would get a $ 1 million a year grant for the next five years. But according to Professor Tom Duck, of Dalhousie University, with the loss of CFCAS, atmospheric and climate research will be funded at less than 70 per cent of the level it was funded at in 2006.)
