The plasma promptly attempts to spread the beam back out, leading to a battle between the spreading and collapsing of an ultra-short laser pulse. This battle is known as filamentation, and produces a filament that only propagates for a short time until the characteristics of air make the beam scatter.

“Because a filament creates excited electrons in its wake as it moves, it artificially seeds the conditions necessary for rain and lightning to occur,” Mills added.
