Canadian Army Firing Of Nike Said Success
“The Canadian Army yesterday fired the second missile in a test of the Nike-Hercules anti-aircraft system at this sub-Arctic base on the western shore of Hudson Bay.
Officers in charge of the joint US-Canadian testing program termed the shot successful.
The launching was to intercept a simulated air attack. It was carried out in what is called an “offset shoot.”
In this, radar controls are reversed so the “attacking” plane appears to be approaching from the opposite direction to its path. The “interception” takes place when the image of the ground-controlled rocket meets the reversed image of the plane.
A 75-man Canadian army team is carrying out the tests and a group of U.S. servicemen give technical advice and supervision.”
