Millions of GMO mosquitoes could be released in Florida in bid to fight viral disease | CTV News

Key West resident Marilyn Smith wasn’t persuaded after Oxitec’s presentation at a public meeting. She says neither disease has had a major outbreak yet in Florida, so “why are we being used as the experiment, the guinea pigs, just to see what happens?”

The U.S. is poised to approve new crops genetically modified by Dow AgroSciences to withstand two herbicides; glyphosate and 2,4-D, in what the company calls its Enlist Weed Control System. If approved, these crops will represent the onset of the second generation of GM herbicide-resistant crops in the country after the first generation of Monsanto’s glyphosate-resistant crops called Roundup Ready, which have unfortunately resulted in a rise of glyphosate-resistant weeds.

If released, Enlist is projected to increase the use of herbicides in the country drastically; the U.S. Department of Agriculture USDA estimates this at 78-176 million pounds. While Dow and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency EPA are saying that there is no or minimal risk of harm to people and the environment, evidence suggests otherwise. For instance, a review of epidemiology studies found a significant link between 2,4-D exposures and non-Hodgkins lymphoma while there are several studies linking 2,4-D exposure and birth defects Item 1.

Well, who knew the guy from Natural News sings too? Apparently a lot of people! Most of his songs are rap style. This one isn’t.

Ecover pioneers ‘synthetic biology’ in consumer products | Climate Connections

In the past eight years, SynBio startups received billions of dollars on the promise that they could engineer algae or bacteria that would eat plant matter and produce jet fuels or exotic biofuels.

They successfully made new organisms that did this, but they ran into trouble achieving production on a scale that made it competitive.

When the first wave of SynBio investment failed to deliver, farmers globally exhaled a sigh of relief. Massive monocultures for biomass uses such as biofuels are already displacing food production in Africa and Asia, and it must have felt like they dodged a bullet.

But the companies started searching for new applications for their sophisticated labs. Now, they believe they have found a quick way to monetize synthetic biology. Their answer is to engineer microorganisms to synthesize food, fragrance and other consumer products. That puts farmers back in the crosshairs.

What Do Those Codes On Stickers Of Fruits And Some Veggies Mean?

Although they seem like a nuisance, the stickers or labels attached to fruit and some vegetables have more of a function than helping scan the price at the checkout stand. The PLU code, or price lookup number printed on the sticker, also tells you how the fruit was grown. By reading the PLU code, you can tell if the fruit was genetically modified, organically grown or produced with chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or herbicides.

Food Industry News: House Bill Aimed At Prohibiting Mandatory GMO Food Labeling

Reuters has recently reported that Mike Pompeo, a Republican congressman from Kansas, introduced legislation on April 16 that would “nullify efforts” in the nearly two dozen states requiring genetically modified food labeling. According to the report, Pompeo expects hearings on the bill sometime this summer.

A Sour Deception: Citric Acid Comes From GMO Black Mold, Not Fruit | Nutritional Anarchy

Manufacturers and distributors of citric acid – as well as the larger food industry who use it as an ingredient in practically everything – benefit from the public’s assumption that citric acid comes from fruit. While this natural appeal is frequently used in food marketing and product imagery (as this chemical manufacturer clearly does), the reality of large scale, mass production of citric acid bears little to no resemblance.
